RedGard Waterproofing Membrane

We’re often asked what redgard is as a company specialising in waterproofing. Is it a coating? A paint? A sealant? Well, all of these things can be answered with yes: redgard can act as all three. But that doesn’t fully answer our question. So what exactly is redgard? What does it do? And how can you use it effectively on your waterproofing project? Let’s find out!

Necessary Tools for Applying Redgard

The best way to apply redgard into concrete, stucco, or any other impervious surface is by using a Sprayer, Roller, and Trowel. Please don’t use anything smaller than a standard trowel because it will make it more difficult for you to spread it over your surface. You also want to avoid applying it with paint rollers; they won’t provide consistent coverage over your application area.

How to Apply Redgard?

If you want to apply redgard efficiently, take a roller or and cover each area in long, even strokes, before using redgard. At first cover those cracks with suitable tape. This will ensure the waterproofing on those crack areas. Make sure that you cover all visible damage with redgard before moving on to another spot. Be careful not to put too much waterproof on your surface because it can be difficult and expensive to remove after it dries.

After covering your first area, continue working until your entire floor is completely covered. If any areas have missed damage spots after applying redgard, repeat until they are fully coated in waterproof. Once your whole surface has been covered, let it dry for about at least 60 to 90 minutes. You should notice a huge difference after drying. During use, the color of redgard is usually pink, but it becomes red after drying. Most people see an immediate difference in their cracked walls when they’ve applied Redgard successfully.

After drying the first layer of redgard:

  • Use the second layer of redgard.
  • Again paint over every crack or damage area with long stripes of redgard.
  • Again allow sufficient time to dry. Usually, 1 hours should do it.
  • Recoat again if necessary.
  • As mentioned above, allow 15-20 mils (3-4 mm) coating per coat depending upon climate conditions.

So if you need three coats, just make sure that you have 30 mils (6 mm) coverage per application; although if you need more protection, simply apply more than three coats till the total protection desired is achieved. But give enough time interval between applying each layer of redgard to become dry.

Common Uses for Redgard

Besides waterproofing, Redgard has found many uses in residential and commercial properties besides waterproofing. For example, it can be used as a dehumidifier for items that you want dryer, reducing unwanted moisture in your closet or other areas of your home.
